The current geopolitical climate and ongoing conflict in the Middle East are significantly impacting global energy markets. While the full extent and duration of these events remain uncertain, one thing is clear: price volatility is the new “normal.”
None of us can control global events. However, you have more power over your business’s energy overheads than you might think. In this blog we answer common questions to help your business move from a reactive stance to a proactive energy strategy.
How do I best protect my business from rising energy costs?
Energy purchasing should never be a calendar driven task. Too many businesses wait until their contract renewal date before reviewing their position, then focus solely on price. Savings may be made on a particular renewal but focusing on the near term could cost your business more in the long-term, leaving you vulnerable. If the market spikes in your ‘usual’ renewal window, then you are trapped with high prices.
At My Energy Consultants, we view energy procurement as a continuous process. By monitoring future forecasts and event-driven spikes, we build robust plans that protect your bottom line from sudden market shocks.
How do I know that what I’m paying for my energy is correct?
It’s estimated that one in five energy bills contain errors, and for businesses juggling multiple meter points or complex utility structures, these errors can quietly drain your capital for years.
Working with an energy partner who provides a dedicated bill-checking service is an investment that often pays for itself. Recent customer examples include:
- The Food Manufacturer: Last year our bill checking service picked up a billing error for a large food manufacturer. We subsequently oversaw a significant investigation spanning 7 years of incorrect invoicing. After presenting findings and proving the overspend, a credit for £498,220 was recovered from the supplier.
- The Hospitality Group: A client was being billed six-figure invoices for the equivalent of 4.5 Olympic swimming pools of water every month. After their previous consultant refused to help, we stepped in to investigate and secured a £113,881 credit.
How can I reduce energy usage without hurting operations?
The cheapest kilowatt-hour is the one you never use. This may sound obvious but despite rising costs, many businesses still have significant energy leaks in their operations.
We use a data-driven approach to pinpoint exactly where wastage occurs.
- Process Optimisation: For a Food Manufacturer we identified and helped adapt a process at their effluent treatment plant, which reduced consumption by 18% and led to a cost saving close to £84,240.
- Behavioural Change: Through detailed analysis we identified the ten highest-consuming sites for a hospitality client, we then worked with managers to drive cultural shifts in energy use. Combined with resolving billing discrepancies, we have recovered approximately £300,000 for them to date.
Is it worth investing in solar panels or other renewables for my business?
Generating your own power is the ultimate way to gain energy independence. Solar and wind remain the most effective solutions for businesses with the physical footprint to support them.
However, generation is only half the battle. To maximize your ROI, you need an effective storage solution, such as a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This allows you to store excess energy and discharge it during peak times. We help you navigate the technical hurdles, such as ensuring your grid connection is commercially viable – a factor that is becoming critical as the UK’s power mix shifts toward renewables.

FAQs:
-
Should I fix my energy contract now or stay on a variable rate?
This is probably our most frequently asked question. If you only look at energy costs when your contract renews you can often find a deal that saves money in the short term but it will cost you more in the longer term as you end up in this scenario. If you work on a long-term strategy then you shouldn’t end up on a variable rate and can save money in the long-run. If you find yourself in this situation please give us a call and we can look into the best way forwards for you.
-
Can I switch suppliers easily, or am I locked in?
This depends on your contract terms. There may be an early termination fee, however paying this could still provide a saving if your new contract is at a good rate. We’d be happy to check for you with no obligation – get in touch with our friendly team.
-
What’s the best way to compare business energy deals?
It’s important to not only consider costs when looking at energy contracts but also the terms of the contract to ensure they are most favourable to your business.
As part of our procurement service we will;
- Carry out in-depth analysis of your energy usage, contracts and metering
- Compare quotes from the best-fit commercial energy suppliers
- Assess inclusive charges and taxes
- Proactively negotiate on energy contract tariff and terms
- Terminate existing contracts and ensure a smooth transfer of energy supply
